Congratulations to Britain's track cycling team on their impressive performance at the Beijing Olympics. The team dominates the track cycling medals table with 7 gold medals (out of a total of 10), 3 silver and 2 bronze. Their closet rivals are Spain, who have won one of each colour. Amazing. And even more so considering that there are only three covered velodromes in the UK! Great news for British cycling!

Chris Hoy has become the first Britain in 100 years to win three gold medals at the same Olympics, winning the team sprint, keirin and sprint titles. In the sprint he beat fellow Brit, Jason Kenny, in the final. Kenny has now claimed his first Olympic medal. Hoy tipped Kenny to become the dominant force in cycling in the next few years.

“Kenny has come through the ranks and he is the man who will win at London 2012. Beating him was really tough. It was probably the hardest race of my life.”

Following Hoy's success, Glasgow City Council announced that the new National Velodrome being built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games would be named in his honour.

In the women's competition, Team GB's Victoria Pendleton beat Australia's Anna Meares in the women's sprint final. Although Pendelton is three-times world sprint champion, this is her first Olympic medal. Pendleton also has the honour of being voted 8th hottest lady in the Olympics to add to her tally!!! British riders also took gold and silver in the women's 3000m individual pursuit with Rebecca Romero beating team-mate Wendy Houvenaghel. Romero is the first British woman to win medals in two different summer Olympic sports. In Athens 2004, she won silver as part of the GB team in the women's quadruple scull. After sustaining a back injury, she took up cycling and was named in the GB squad less than a year after taking up the sport. Unbelievable.

British cyclists also took gold in the team pursuit, breaking their own world record with an astonishing time of 3 minutes 53.134 seconds. They pushed the Danes into silver position by 6.7 seconds. The team pursuit was a second gold medal in this competition for Bradley Wiggins, who also won the individual pursuit. Wiggins has won a total of five medals over three Olympics.

As Great Britain are still holding on the third place in the overall medal table, it has been an exciting year for British Olympians all round. Bring on London 2012!!!!!
