Singles or clinchers

Just bought an old Peugeot road bike it has singles. Intending to create a single speed commuting road bike.
Road and bike track conditions are pretty good and generally I've been riding my road bike.
The wheels are in quite good condition singles also but will replace. Are singles too much of a hassle and a maintenance nightmare or if they already exist is it worth keeping them for the time being.
What is the current gear inch being used? I see most bikes have 42 / 15 = 75". This seems like a big gear for the only one.
Thanks
